The Municipality of Prizren – Directorate for Tourism and Economic Development considers Prizren as one of the most important cultural and historical centers in Kosovo which welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors and tourists from all over the world every year. The city of Prizren continues to be a bridge between cultures, religions and traditions, promoting the values of our cultural heritage and the civic hospitality that has characterized this city for centuries.
However, in recent years, a phenomenon of the presence and operation of illegal tourist guides from different countries, who exercise their activity without the relevant certifications and authorizations, has been observed with concern. In addition to damaging fair competition against certified local guides, in certain cases incorrect interpretations and distortions of historical facts have also been identified, damaging the narrative and authentic presentation of the heritage of our country.
The Municipality of Prizren emphasizes that the regulation of this field remains a competence of the central level. Although the tourism law is in force, there is still a lack of a specific regulation that would enable more efficient addressing and supervision of the activity of tourist guides in general, and especially for foreign ones. Such a legal framework is necessary for the protection of the public interest, the preservation of historical and cultural integrity, as well as for the support of certified local professionals who contribute to the development of tourism in our city.
After meetings and discussions with various stakeholders, including representatives of the Kosovo Tourist Guides Association GUIDEKS, the Municipality of Prizren reiterates its institutional commitment and is working to find a concrete solution to address this worrying phenomenon. We will continue to commit to presenting Prizren with dignity, professionalism and authenticity to every visitor who chooses to visit our city.
